On January 4, 1840, in the German settlement known as the Freistadt Colony, early Mequon settler Klaus Mueller was stricken with what is believed to be the first case of Restless Leg Syndrome in Wisconsin. At the time, the only accepted treatment was to bind the afflicted sleepkicker to a birch tree and beat him with a hickory switch.
